Tests aimed at detecting SARS-CoV-2 RNA (so called oro-pharyngeal swabs)

The Swabs are molecular diagnostic tests that detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the mucus collected with an oro-pharyngeal swab, and are therefore able to ascertain the presence of the infection in progress at the time of the test.

The test is practically non-invasive and is performed in a few seconds, however, in order to have a reliable result it is necessary that a precise protocol of sampling is followed, and that the test is performed by specialized personnel equipped with personal protective equipment.

Once extracted from the patient’s mouth, the stick is immersed in a gel, inserted into an ad hoc container and then sent to the authorized laboratory of the MultiMedica Group (the Polo Scientifico Tecnologico of Milan) that will determine the characteristics of the material taken.

Through appropriate molecular tests (Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction) the polymerase chain reaction developed on the basis of the genetic sequence of the virus Sars-cov-2 isolated by the researchers is performed, to identify its presence in the oropharynx.

No, there is no need for fasting and no need to stop taking medications.

If the result of the swab is positive, it means that the patient – at the time of the swab – had an active SARS-CoV-2 infection. According to current regulations, in case of a positive swab result:

  • the patient will be classified as a Covid “case”
  • the result of the swab will be communicated by MultiMedica to the ATS on a daily basis according to the route and modalities indicated by the Lombardy Region;
  • the patient will be informed about the need for mandatory domiciliation, and fiduciary domiciliation for cohabitants and close contacts.

In case of positive result, and in the absence of symptoms, the patient will have to observe the mandatory quarantine of 10 days at the end of which a swab will be performed; if negative, the patient will be allowed to re-enter in the community.

In case of positive result, and in presence of symptoms, the patient will be able to re-enter in community after a period of isolation of at least 10 days from the appearance of symptoms (not considering loss of taste and/or loss of smell that can have prolonged persistence in time) accompanied by a swab with negative result performed after at least 3 days without symptoms.
In case of a positive result, it is still advisable to contact your doctor who will formalize the mandatory isolation and request the swab that certifies the recovery.

Underage users must be accompanied by those exercising parental authority (parents, guardian or special curator) otherwise we will not be able to proceed with the provision of the service. The accompanying person will be asked to sign the consent to the processing of data and the cumulative declaration in lieu of certification that self-certifies the degree of kinship.
In case the minor should be accompanied by a relative who does not exercise parental authority, it is necessary that he/she has a proxy or a written authorization from the parental authority.
